At Geranium Street, we are honored and proud to help our clients define their space and create privacy within it. Our most recent installation was no exception. For this project, we were challenged to create privacy on a second-story balcony using a continuous, freestanding hedge that was to be over 70 feet long. That may seem nearly impossible, but it was a challenge we were happy to solve.
The overall height of this balcony privacy hedge was to be eight feet and their placement on the second floor meant wind would certainly be a factor to consider and overcome. Located in San Francisco, these hedges would also have to be raised, if only slightly, off the ground to let rainwater flow under them and drain from the balcony. We were able to create a custom design to solve both of these challenges.
Our clients chose to include a base made from IPE wood on their hedges. The 18” base matched existing IPE wood used around the home and provided a nice compliment to the overall design of the home. The IPE wood also provided additional weight to help anchor the hedges. Or course, we also added weight to the interior of the hedges as well. We weren’t going to let the wind get the better of our hedges.

This installation took almost a week. Built mostly on-site and from the ground up, these hedges will be a part of this home for years to come. We couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.
